Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Florida Building Code on Accessibility

     Caring & Sharing Center for Independent Living is actively involved in the removal of architectural, attitudinal and communication barriers that prevent the full integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society. The following services are available via our Accessibility Coordinator, Angel Watson:

  • Training workshops on the ADA and Florida Code for businesses, government entities, museums, restaurants, etc.
  • Site surveys that describe the accessible features as well as the inaccessible features of a building or service. v Review of architectural drawings in reference to accessibility.
  • Technical assistance to individuals with disabilities who have experienced a problem(s) related to accessibility.
  • Expert training with continuing education credits for professional associations (e.g. American Institute of Architects-AIA).
  • Disability awareness sensitivity training to eliminate or reduce attitudinal barriers/stereotyping persons with disabilities.
  • Training the Trainer-such as municipal employees who are charged with educating municipalities about their responsibilities under the ADA and the Florida Building Code on Accessibility.
  • Training consumers with disabilities on their rights under the ADA and Florida Code and how to be effective self-advocates re: the law.
  • Technical assistance on Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Useful Web Sites/Information Sources

      There are many sites on the Internet where consumers and advocates can increase their knowledge of the ADA and the Florida Code on Accessibility.
