You don’t want to miss this year’s Adaptive Fitness Expo (AFE) which celebrates its 10 year anniversary. This year will be bigger than ever with demonstrations of wheelchair soccer, basketball and a variety of adaptive sports and recreation activities including dance, Tai Chi and yoga. Representatives from organizations providing services or products related to disability and/or fitness are present to share information.
The Adaptive Fitness Expo (AFE) is held annually in early October. It is a free community awareness and participation event to promote health and fitness for persons with physical disabilities.
A variety of activities are available throughout the day for participants to experience. Over the years this has included kayaking, handcrank bikes, rock wall, table tennis, power soccer, tennis, basketball.
Lunch will be provided by renown Lonnie’s Sandwiches, Etc, Feathersound.
AFE was created in 2000 to educate the community and persons with disabilities that improved health was possible despite limitations. Initial collaborators included HealthSouth Rehab Hospital in Largo, St Petersburg Therapeutic Recreation Department, Pinellas County Parks and Caring & Sharing Center for Independent Living, Inc. In 2004 the event, then known as Huff N’ Puff Fitness Frolic, was cited in the Therapeutic Recreation Journal as an example of ‘the type of interagency cooperation envisioned by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2000.’
Due to growth in community interest this year the event will be held at the Walter Fuller Recreation Center and Park, 7891 26th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, FL 33710. This venue promises to be the ideal setting with access to a lake, air conditioned gymnasium and beautiful shaded park grounds.

St Petersburg Therapeutic Recreation Department. The staff has been instrumental to the continued and increasing support from several departments within the City of St Petersburg.
Wrightway Consulting, Inc. – This local company has been a major sponsor and valued creative contributor since 2006.
Dr. Shapiro, All Children’s Hospital – with assistance from several volunteers a wheelchair detailing service is provided at no cost. A popular addition to AFE since 2007
